About us

The Saint Cecilia Singers is Gloucester Cathedral's chamber choir, an affiliation we value very highly.

Founded in 1949 by Donald Hunt, the choir has throughout most its 70 year history been conducted by the Assistant Director of Music of Gloucester Cathedral. This gives us the benefit of working with some of the brightest new talents in choral music, many of whom have gone on to great things. Our current conductor, Jonathan Hope, is no exception.

We have the privilege of performing at least twice a year in Gloucester Cathedral. Our Christmas concert is for many people the start of their Christmas celebrations. We also sing Evensong in the Cathedral at least once a year, often followed by a free concert.

We are most grateful for the attentive support and wise counsel we receive from our President and Vice Presidents.

Our conductor

In September 2014 Jonathan Hope, Assistant Director of Music at Gloucester Cathedral, joined us as conductor. Jonathan was Organ Scholar at Winchester Cathedral from 2012, where he also served as Acting Sub-Organist and Director of the Girls' Choir.

Jonathan has played with the Philharmonia Orchestra and appeared at St. John's, Smith Square and in the Queen Elizabeth Hall (Southbank Centre, London), and has broadcast live on Radio 3 and Radio 4. In The 2016 Three Choirs Festival, Jonathan conducted the Saint Cecilia Singers in a performance of Howells' Requiem and the world première of Philip Lancaster's War Passion.

In 2015 he released his first solo disc, Gloucester Experience (Willowhayne Records), and in 2016 he released a DVD, The Grand Organ of Gloucester Cathedral, with Priory Records.
